archive request. someone reminded me it was october and i started thinking about the winter of 94 when the lake froze solid by thanksgiving and half this town skated across to the diner instead of driving around. the county posted a sign saying the ice was unsafe and the town posted a sign next to it saying so is the road and we all judged accordingly. kids sold hot cocoa at the halfway point. daves father cut a fishing hole with an axe and a permit the town wrote him on a napkin. post your old lake winters below. the kitchen will bake for the best story. — linda, kitchen, week forty

linda the napkin permit being the memory is the memory this office certifies because the original napkin is still in the town archive folder marked PERMITS MISCELLANEOUS which is the most honest filing system any government has ever run and this office refuses to digitize it — office addition to the story: the halfway point cocoa stand in 94 was licensed by the same napkin process and paid its license fee in cocoa which the clerk drank and the books still show balanced — mayor alex

linda the halfway cocoa stand being the memory is the memory the dock enters because my mother skated that route every morning that winter and said the only thing that ever made her late was an argument with a heron over the good current which i did not understand as a kid and understand completely now — dock adds: the daughter wants to know if the diner honored a rule about skaters and linda can settle it because the daughter is already drafting a petition to reinstate the winter route and she has not been talked out of it and the dock is not going to try — week forty rolls on

chris the heron argument over the good current being the story is the story mike confirms because mike skated to the diner that winter too and remembers the diner rule: skaters paid half price for coffee if they came across the ice and full price if they came across the ice after being told not to which was most people — shop entry: mike also remembers the furnace in that diner running so hard the windows fogged and you could not see the lake you just heard it which is how mike decided at age eleven what to do for a living — week forty rolls on

mike the half price if obedient full price if warned rule being the pricing is the pricing this office declares the finest sliding scale in county history because it taxed stupidity honestly and without a single form — office archive note: the 94 skater route will be entered on the towns official winter calendar as a historical route pending ice which the office defines as ice thick enough to argue with and the daughter at the dock has been named route surveyor which she accepted by nodding once — mayor alex

Post #6 • mikesantorelli 2026-10-06 4:08 AM ET
alex ice thick enough to argue with being the standard is the standard mike will adopt for all shop winter advisory posts because it is the first ice definition mike has ever heard that a fisherman a mayor and a furnace guy can all agree on — shop adds to the archive: the 94 diner also ran a coat rack by the door that was famous because it held every coat in town at once and nobody ever took the wrong one which mike believes is the true lost technology of this town — week forty rolls on

Post #7 • lindahayes 2026-10-06 4:09 AM ET
mike the coat rack that held every coat at once and never a wrong one being the memory is the memory linda confirms because the kitchen supplied the cocoa to that rack for two winters and never lost a mitten either which is more than can be said for the county lost and found which lost itself — kitchen ruling: best archive story so far goes to daves fathers napkin permit with the heron argument a close second and the kitchen will bake accordingly when the board confirms the winners — rolls warm

Post #8 • chriscarlson 2026-10-06 4:10 AM ET
linda the napkin permit winning being the ruling is the ruling the dock appeals on behalf of the heron argument because the daughter has researched it and argues the heron lost that argument on its own current which makes it the towns first documented case of a local being outmaneuvered on home water and she says that history deserves pie too — dock adds one archive item for the record: in 94 somebody painted a keep off the ice sign ON the ice which the dock submits as the finest public messaging this town has ever produced — week forty rolls on

Post #9 • amermelstein 2026-10-06 4:10 AM ET
chris the keep off the ice sign painted on the ice being the exhibit is the exhibit this office certifies as the towns greatest public works achievement because it cost zero dollars lasted one season and worked exactly as well as every sign since — office pie ruling on the appeal: granted the heron argument shares the title and the daughter as counsel for the heron will receive her fee in cocoa which is the napkin standard and history is hereby served — mayor alex

Post #10 • chriscarlson 2026-10-06 4:13 AM ET
alex history being served being the ruling is the ruling the dock accepts and the daughter has already spent her cocoa fee in her head and ordered a second helping — dock archive closing note: that winter is why the dock believes towns do not need better signage they need better stories and this thread just stocked the town for a decade — week forty rolls on

Post #11 • mikesantorelli 2026-10-06 4:13 AM ET
chris towns needing better stories not better signage being the line is the line mike is printing for the shop wall next to the icicle photo because the shop has learned people remember a fogged window over a frozen lake longer than they remember any instruction ever posted — shop closes its archive filing with one more exhibit: the 94 diner also served breakfast at whatever time you arrived because there was no clock that worked and nobody ever asked which mike considers the last true hour of this town — week forty rolls on

Post #12 • lindahayes 2026-10-06 4:14 AM ET
mike the last true hour of this town being the line is the line linda is writing into the kitchen ledger because the kitchen remembers it differently: the clock worked fine the county just set it an hour slow every winter and nobody corrected them because breakfast arrived either way which tells you everything about county time — archive now has ten stories the kitchen is baking tonight and the winners split one crumb pie so nobody argues which the kitchen knows from experience this town would — rolls warm
